9 Out of 10 Beginning Affiliate Marketers Don’t Know the Basics

By

Kay and I were doing well with our retail site, Cactus Canyon, back in 2006. About that time I decided to enter the Internet marketing arena (We were already Internet marketers of course, but I wanted to begin teaching other people how to succeed online.)

“Internet marketing” is a huge area that beginning online marketers should stay away from. It was quite a challenge for me to get any traction whatsoever in this hugely competitive area.

For a long time almost all my leads resulted from my participation in an affiliate marketing forum. And still today, a large number of the folks on my mailing list are very interested in affiliate marketing.

I’ve worked and interacted with countless numbers of beginning affiliate marketers in the past 5 years.  Most beginners have the same misconceptions about how to succeed with affiliate marketing.

Tips, tricks, and advice for would-be affiliate marketers:

  • Don’t expect any sales for at least a few months
  • Don’t expect to “quit your job” before a few years of very hard work
  • Selling affiliate products on a web site is easy… GETTING TARGETED TRAFFIC is the hard part.
  • “Make money without a web site”….yeah, right.
  • “The money is in the list” applies to affiliate marketing.
  • Don’t even think about using AdWords or any other form of PPC until great success with organic traffic is achieved.
  • THINK NICHE! Beginners who go after anything related to computers, Internet, marketing, business, diet, insurance, dating, etc. will fail.
  • Never underestimate the opportunity micro niche marketing offers.
  • It’s MUCH better to have a small piece of a small pie than ZERO from a giant pie (high competition area)
  • Digital products offer much higher commissions, but physical products are easier to sell…all things being equal.
  • Successful affiliate marketers almost always offer GREAT value to the world. What value will you offer?  (no easy answer for most beginners)
  • If you can’t find a variety of great affiliate products to offer in your niche, find another niche (unless the one product you offer has been around for a while and has a good track record)
  • Affiliate marketers who are very proficient in basic marketing strategies, list building, SEO, WordPress (site design), article marketing, video marketing, backlinking in general, and copywriting will have the greatest success.
  • There are NO packages or “systems” you can buy that replace all the grunt work required in the beginning. Later, there are tools that help. But all beginners must “learn the ropes” first.
  • Massive action is required in the beginning. Plan on a LOT of computer time for many months. (not trying to scare you away…just sayin’ how it is)

If you understand all I’ve covered here, you are closer to success than 95% of all new affiliate marketers.

    Hi Steve

I couldn’t agree more with the points you have outlined here , When I first started looking into earning on line I too fell into the trap of thinking that it was the so called “make money” portion of the market, you know the portion with all it’s “Scammy” Products “click here and start earning a thousand a day……and so on.

I am glad I came across you a couple of years ago and I have been on the correct learning curve ever since.

Learning the fundamentals in any business or trade correctly is essential for your FUTURE success.

Keep up the great tips, it doesn’t matter how long we have been in this industry we still all need this stuff.

    All the best….Peter

I understand where you are coming from, yes! it takes alot of hours on the computer at first and alot of reading. I have over Hundreds of books about of the Things you need to know about internet marketing in general and books about software and etc. I Fill like a freshman in this business, still learning and always will. You have inspired me ‘Thanks’ for your help.

Steve, you use the word “expect” in the first few items above and I believe this is where problems start for beginners. The expectations are wrong, it’s almost tragic because they were influenced by misleading ads, they get frustrated, quit and this could have been an opportunity of a lifetime for them.

I hope more people align with realistic expectations so they can better understand how the Internet can be an opportunity to own a business and create future wealth.

I have been a member with Steve for about 6 months and have experienced most of what he says on this page. I used an approach of short term goals like learning the basics of seo, html code and then becoming familiar with the word press administration panel.

I found it to be important to remember that “good is good enough” because if you try to learn to well in the beginning you become discouraged due to slow progress. As I proceeded to the next topics that needed to be learned I would find that a review is necessary, however learning past topics became easier because I now knew why I needed to know that.

After knowing just enough I published my first site at http://allaboutflying.net and felt a relief that I was finally live on the web. I built links to it for about a month and became a little discouraged because I didn’t know how I was doing (at that time I didn’t have Market Samurai). Also I wasn’t satisfied with the appearance of the site and it’s lack of doable keywords to produce more pages so I decided to put it on hold.

Now my second site at http://rccontrolled.net may not be the best around but I think anyone would agree that it is a fair amount better that the first. After 6 weeks of link building my home page is #5 on page one of google search.

So that is a brief overview of my progress. I would recommend that you stay with Steve to get the details you will need as you progress.

    Hi Steve,
didn’t talk a long time. I am still on your list, silently following up your blog articles. Again a great post, 100% like it is.

Making money on the internet, especially with affiliate marketing is a dream job: can work from home, can work from anywhere and anytime you like. And the income is without any physical or contractual limits, except the ones being connected with your abilities and laser-targeted, goal oriented working efforts.

But, to make a dream come true, there is hard, cruel work in the beginning. Otherwise not only anyone would try this method, also everyone would succeed. It’s a hard time, first few years. But if one goes all the way through, it can really be a life changer.

For beginning, but also more advanced marketers I can also advise to use Steve’s blog here regularly and intensely to learn and apply his methods. At least this way you have not to learn everything the hard way, but can shorten at least a huge part of the learning curve! Wish I had such a great resource on affiliate marketing available, when I started out 10 years ago!

    Hi Adam,…Try this: http://wordpress-17920-39382-109004.cloudwaysapps.com/find-a-niche/

There are tons and tons of niches…once you “get it”, the problem becomes that you think of too many of them all the time 🙂

  9. Steve says:

Hey Marcel! Nice to hear from you! Yep, long time no talk! Thanks for the comments! …would love to hear more of what you are doing now.

Thanks Jeremy! Glad you are still reading my stuff! ….let me know if I can ever help you with anything!

  10. Pete says:

Couldn’t agree with you more Steve. Building the web site is the easy thing. Finding a micro niche and keywords to match then manufacturing traffic is the difficult part.
I think we all spend most of our time in front of our keyboards tapping away.
If you can still manage to find a micro niche within the big niches then you can still make some dollars.

  11. Steve says:

Yes, finding niches is the key. But truthfully, it’s really pretty easy. Most of the people that consult with me in my “Talk to Steve” program start off with that problem: “I can’t find a niche”

With just a short Q & A with them, and a few minutes of research, that issue is easily solved every time.

  12. Yes this is very easy,to target traffic on a keyword is not an easy task.

Although I give away a LOT of info, I do promote some third party products that I use and find great value in.
Usually, I will receive a commission when these products are purchased from this site.
But as I said, I NEVER promote anything unless I find it valuable in my own business.
